Kusama Yayoi is well known for her eccentrically appealing ‘dotty’ artwork. That large pumpkin on the pier at Naoshima is one of my favourite images and a must-see on my next trip to Japan. Also part of the 2008 Kennedy Center Japan festival which included Maio Motoko, Kusama’s work is featured at the Queensland Art Gallery from 19 November 2011- 11 March 2012.
Kusama Yayoi was born in 1929 and is a painter, sculptor, film-maker, novelist and poet who has been creating works since the tender age of 10. Kusama’s work is based on her unique, personal interpretation and experience of her long struggle with mental illness. Best known for her dotty pumpkin sculptures and surrealist paintings it is difficult to fit her within one art genre.
