A highlight of travels in Japan is being able to visit artists in their studios. This trip we visited the studio of Kaneko Tōru in Chiba. Kishi Eiko and Takahiro Kondō in Kyoto, and Koji Hatakeyama in Takaoka.
Long have we sought to plan a solo exhibition of the works of Kishi Eiko, but the artist is in such demand that this is yet to eventuate. Kishi’s works are monumental in creativity and technical complexity as well as size and she works alone, thus her output is limited. We were lucky to see some of the new works in progress and have certainly registered our interest, hoping to exhibit some of these in 2016. Upcoming in the next exhibition ‘Presence’ is a beautiful tea bowl, named ‘Forest Light’ a rare work in the artist’s oeuvre.
