The stunning textile art of master Shumei Kobayashi was on exhibit at the gallery in April. A regular visitor to Sydney, this was Shumei’s first exhibition in Melbourne for decades. Gracing the walls of Tetsuya’s restaurants in both Sydney and Singapore, Shumei’s artistic abilities have been challenged by a recent commission at Azuma Restaurant in Chifley Plaza, Sydney.
Shumei has kept us up to date on progress of this tour de force work of 24 metres length. Nothing however could have prepared us for the breath-taking creative and visual splendour of the work in situ. Surrounded by this magnificent work, we lunched at Azuma with Shumei and Mitsuo last week. Chef Azuma Kimitaka’s superb cuisine was served on Mitsuo’s vessels as soft Spring light filtered through Shumei’s woven surfaces. We are told night time is another adventure all together. Unfortunately, not in Melbourne, but a must to see when next in our neighbouring city.
Shumei is currently on site completing the installation before returning to Japan via Singapore, where he is consulting on new work for Tetsuya’s Waku Ghin restaurant in Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. With Dom Perignon rumoured to be the house wine, we think it might be some time before we get to experience the restaurant.
We have limited works by Shumei in the gallery, please contact us for the digital catalogue or make an appointment to see available pieces.
